Alternative R&B Beats

Alternative R&B (or trapsoul) lives in the space between hard and soft, and so do these instrumentals. The drums carry the weight, but the melodies say what the drums can’t. The production pulls from soul, neo soul, and contemporary R&B while holding the low-end pressure of a modern rhythm section. Think 6lack, SZA, Brent Faiyaz territory. Personal without being soft. Melodic without losing its edge.

I build melodies first. Different keys, different chord progressions, until I feel something. Yeah, I know you are supposed to follow music theory and I largely do, but this is about feeling and I have generations of music coursing through my veins. Drums, subs, and ear candy come after. The most important part is the space I leave for vocals. A multi-platinum producer once told me I’d mastered the art of simplicity early, conveying emotion without all the extra sounds. This is the difference between providing a vocal canvas and just being performative. That’s why these instrumentals work for vocalists, and especially for alternative R&B artists.

If you want the melody softer and the pocket warmer, that’s R&B. If you want the 808 running the record instead of supporting it, that’s Trap. This section is the middle ground where both are true at once.
