Some get into music production because they see an opportunity to make money. I got into music production because I was writing my own songs and needed beats. Through that creation process I learned I didn’t like using the same beats as other people. This is how I still think about production today. Be original and don’t use the same beats as others. This is the #1 reason why I do exclusives only and refuse to do beat leases. For me, it was never about money but rather authenticity.
I’ve always had a musical ear, with the saxophone as my first instrument. I played that through most of middle school and high school. I also earned by studying the production of others to understand song arrangement and techniques. I deconstructed with a musical ear a lot of R&B, Soul, Hip-Hop, Gospel, and even film scores. I also listen to other genres like Indie, Folk, and Rock. All of this is input into who I am musically today.
My sound has evolved over the years but the consistent theme is they are melodic. This gives me a lot of versatility and it’s what’s allowed me to work with independent artists from all over the U.S., including LA, NYC, and Houston. I have composed music for Black Theatre and got placements internationally through sync music, including having my music on TV networks like Ovation and Bravo.
Looking back, I’ve done well, but I’m definitely not done. I would love nothing more though to work with like-minded creatives who not only move with purpose, but also have the same energy and commitment. If you hear something that moves you and you catch yourself thinking “where did those lyrics come from?” – reach out, we need to talk!
1 Samual 16:23 Whenever the evil spirit from God bothered Saul, David would play his harp. Saul would relax and feel better, and the evil spirit would go away.
